It HAS been a long time: a post about excuses & Caroline’s doll

since I last blogged… I am trying to incorporate two new habits in my life and the status quo has been fighting that ….

I want to do the Leslie Sansone Walk at Home program everyday and I want to write 1000-2000 words a day.

And doing both daily has completely improved my world… but it has been a  battle to actually do them but everyday I try not to do anything else until I have done them… luckily I am starting to do them earlier in the day. This way a few other things are getting done also.

I started with the one mile walk, and then I would do that twice a day, yesterday I did the two mile walk for the first time… as Leslie and the ladies (uh, one gentleman) like to say this is NOT yo’ mama’s stroll around the block… the music sets a fast pace, and she has you doing all these squats, kicks, and knee lifts as well as arm strengthening with weighted balls (I am still using pop bottles) while you keep walking… and I have no idea if anything about my health is improving, but I am starting to feel great.

Side note… I got my doctor to consider prescribing bio-identical hormones for me… actually he said I could go to the compounding pharmacy in town, find out what I want prescribed, and as long as it isn’t actually a controlled substance (paraphrase here) he will prescribe it. Yes Beth is happy.

Tony made me an excel spreadsheet to track how many words a day I am writing, and it all these bells and whistles in it… bottom line… I am writing daily, one day only 221 words, but I the last two days I met my target.

I have been dying to get to crafts, scrapping but have put everything on back burner until these two activities become habits… this morning I have not done either, the walking wakes up the house, but I was itching to write to you all, and so I told myself I had 15 minutes to blog… if i could it in that space of time ….

and a story to tell…. last year I was in the Salvation Army thrift store and I spotted a doll… and my heart swelled and said “CAROLINE!” this is for Caroline (Angie’s [and Mark's] own doll baby.) She was about 2 feet tall, she stood, wore an elegant velvet Victorian dress in royal blue, with lace trim and fancy buttons, had two shoes and one über-fancy hat. I brought her home, announced to the family she was being sent to Caroline. (shhhhh, some people in our house said she was U-G-L-Y.) but Miss Banana said you cant send that to Caroline without something for Edison, and so Fancy Pants doll sat on Katherine’s dresser. She got held occasionally by us, she was moved by Katherine daily as she is kind of big and often got in the way… and all the while she was known as Caroline’s doll, as if Caroline had left her one day at our house.

She went to the US with us a few times as I was going to mail her without anything for Edison in the box, hey he is a teenage football playing boy… I barely buy Joel anything because their shopping habits are a mystery to most people… as I said she went to the States a few times and would return un-mailed, back to Katherine’s room (sometimes she stood upon the bass amp.) then we were moving and she went to live in the basement of Thunder Bay Christian Fellowship Church… once in our new house, she lived in the translucent bin marked “Mary’s Stuff,” where she lay on her back at the top of the bin, looking out at us through milky white plastic.

And then finally, a week or so ago, I packed up Caroline’s doll, a SWC Senior concert Band Candy-gram for Edison

and we headed to the Grand Portage Post Office. On the way there, Hannah asked “what about Angie?” luckily for me I had mistakenly  asked for two copies of Sandra Lee’s new magazine and so there was a ready made present for Angie waiting for us at the post office… the post mistress there always scrounges for boxes for me when I am mailing stuff, and she was so sweet and loving with the doll finding the right box to use. And yes you guessed it— at the post office, Hannah said, And Mark? I sent Katherine to the general store for “elegant quality chocolates.”

sorry Angie if I have taken away some of the splendor of the gift with the re-telling of how it all came to be.

I had put a big smiley face in Caroline’s name as I was addressing the box which led to other people decorating the box… on the way home someone made a comment about how we had sent her without a shoe and without the hat… we still need to find those… well my time is up and I have to do some writing… and I have tons more stuff to tell you … tonight is Cabaret at the high school, gotta find my dancing shoes…

Love the story about the doll – but where is the picture of it? :) Does writing on your blog count toward your goal? It should. Your stories here are lyrical. I haven’t been scrapping much lately either and when I do, I don’t post them anywhere because I HATE HATE HATE writing the darn credits! ;) If you ever want to peek at my scrap pages, I have a second little blog (mostly for my mom) where I post all my pages sans credits! http://www.scubadoll.blogspot.com/

The roses photo was edited slightly – I boosted the saturation and the brightness but only so the picture would more accurately reflect the reality of those blooms!

I’m so with Melinda on this one. Beth, I’m willing to be that you could write about toilet paper and still make it sound good. Your stories are always colorful. I do feel so cheated though that I didn’t get to see a picture of Caroline’s doll. Oh well. What can you do?

Well, as Caroline’s mom, I will do my best to post a picture on my blog, and you can link to it here! :)

Okay. . .here’s the part that cracked us up. . . .we couldn’t find the shoe, and panicked!

We searched in the packing, in the box, under the couch — and just decided that the shoe must’ve stayed in Canada for some reason.

My favorite part of your retelling? The part where you say it was like Caroline had just left the doll at your house. Oh, how I wish that were true. . . . So very, very much.

And, one last thing (confession time here): I have not been doing my walking like I should have. Your post has not only given me the kick in the pants I need, but it’s also inspired to me to WALK. . . not sure about the every day part. . .but to walk and feel better.

    I love you….

I just read your comments . . . and I thought of you during the psych marathon. Knowing that you would have enjoyed each minute. ;)

I really *do* tire of the Wiggles. But, they sing songs about JESUS on the Christmas DVDs, and that’s gotta count for something these days. . . .

Love you — have a blessed Lord’s Day tomorrow. I’ll try to blog & post pictures after lunch…and before the NASCAR race! :)
