Chasing The Wind
Uncategorized August 1st, 2007
So I was reading the book of Ecclesiastics today, well not the whole book, just a chapter, and I noticed that Solomon, the King who wrote the book, uses the expression “chasing the wind” a lot, in reference to the meaningless of life without God. And so I wanted to know really what that meant, so I looked it up and there is no set defintion of the expression, but I did find this statement on one site…
“Chasing the wind – can you imagine anything more futile? If you manage to catch it, what will you have? Can you put your arms around it? Can you take it home and make something out of it? Is there any market for wind?”
So yeah…I just felt like sharing that, because it said a lot to me…that without God, life isn’t worth it…it’s kind of like that Relient K song (I know, I know) “Let It All Out” where it says
“The end will justify the pain it took to get us there”
Alright…so I know I’m kind of rambling…but whatever, hopefully someone somewhere understands.

Well, I do relate to the futility of ‘Chasing the Wind’ in your spiritual analogy, but how about this: ‘Chasing the Wind’ is also the title of Steve Fossett’s autobiography – you know the guy (multimillionaire, as he may be) who is chasing his personal dreams around the globe in various challenges. What does he achieve??? Certainly nothing marketable but does it have value? For him, I am sure the answer is ‘yes’.

It’s amazing how we can often fill our lives with meaningless things. It’s so important to store up our treasures in heaven where moths cannot destroy and thieves cannot steal. While we can strive to achieve personal satisfaction (and succeed), we can’t take any of it with us. I was listening to Jon Courson this morning and he said that as we serve others and are the “under-rowers” (one of the definitions of servant in greek) and toil to help other people get where they need to be, the benefit is that we end up there, too. How much better to seek to serve God by serving others and watch where we all end up!

It is true when you said “that without God life isn’t worth it.” If it wasn’t for God I know I would not want to live this life. I would be so lost. I can’t imagine my life without Him.
